History

In the early 1900’s, Carl Niederhofer was a successful builder in Lancaster, N.Y. After suffering substantial losses in the Depression, he moved his family to Homer in the early thirties. Here he continued the tradition of craftsmanship in building that his father, Joseph, brought from Germany. After World War II, Carl’s son Vern, (Tom’s father) went to work for his father. After finishing his time in the service, Vern’s brother Carlton (Dutch) also joined the company. In 1949 they started their first development in Cortland. In 1954 Carl retired, leaving the business to Vern and Carlton who then opened the Acme Lumber, a full service lumber yard. For over 25 years Vern and Carlton built hundreds of high quality, affordable homes. The developments they created are now mature, comfortable neighborhoods. Tom Niederhofer started his construction career in 1973, developing his skills on crews in Pennsylvania and Texas before moving back home to build his own company in Homer.
